"You can see the stadium attendance rates declining, TV broadcasting rights fees dropping, and football gradually losing its attraction among young people. We must take action," Florentino Pérez warned as he cried wolf about the perceived downturn in football's popularity. However, contrary to his dire predictions, the market seems to tell a different story.

According to the latest estimates from Transfermarkt, there are 19 players in world football with a market value exceeding €100 million in 2025, setting a new record for the "Billion-Euro Club." The flourishing football market appears to be more vibrant than ever.

Commonplace Billion-Euro Players

In this list of "billion-euro players" published by Transfermarkt, the Premier League and La Liga each have seven representatives, while Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga contribute three and two respectively, with no players from Serie A making the cut.

Real Madrid boasts four players on the list—Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr., Jude Bellingham, and Federico Valverde—making it the club with the most billion-euro players.

Paris Saint-Germain follows closely with three players—Vitinha, João Neves, and Ousmane Dembélé. Meanwhile, Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich each have two players valued over €100 million, whereas Manchester City and Atlético Madrid each have one such player.

From First to Many

Lionel Messi became the first player to reach the €100 million valuation mark in 2010, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo two years later. Neymar joined them as the third member of the "billion-euro club" in 2015.

By 2018, Eden Hazard, Mohamed Salah, and Kylian Mbappé had all surpassed €150 million in value, rapidly expanding the club. Today, 19 players have reached the €100 million milestone, with Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Amial reaching even beyond the €200 million threshold.

Premier League and La Liga: Different Paths

During the era dominated by Messi and Ronaldo, the top five spots in player valuations were typically held by Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Today, however, the landscape has changed significantly. Not only does the Premier League now rival La Liga in terms of the number of billion-euro players but also showcases a formidable buying power that suggests future dominance.

Market Frenzy Exemplified

The summer transfer window of 2025 highlighted the extent of inflated player values. Among the seven English players listed, Bukayo Saka was the only one who did not cost his club a significant fee; others like Jude Bellingham commanded hefty sums upwards of €100 million. This trend underscores the high entry costs associated with acquiring talent in the Premier League compared to other leagues.

Investing in Youth: A Key Strategy

Clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich focus on investing in youth talents early, recognizing the importance of securing promising players before they become too expensive. This approach not only mitigates financial risks but also ensures high returns through potential resale at elevated prices.

New Era, New Challenges

With the departure of Messi, Neymar, and Mbappé, PSG shifted towards nurturing young talent, producing three new billion-euro players within a year. The club's success under Luis Enrique demonstrates the effectiveness of building a team around young players rather than relying solely on established stars.

As football continues to evolve, so do the strategies employed by clubs to maintain their competitive edge. While concerns about football's declining appeal persist, the market's vitality suggests otherwise, paving the way for an exciting new chapter in the sport's history.
